R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), Karel Capek. First American Edition, First Printing, being the first edition in English. Originally published in Czech in 1920, R.U.R. introduced the term "robot" to the world lexicon and is a dramatic account of a robot rebellion which leads to the extinction of the human species. An early and influential fictional treatment of artificial intelligence. Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1923. A Near Fine copy in an admittedly poor, but present dust jacket. Binding is tight, sturdy and square. Clean, with no markings. A hint of shelfwear to boards with a slight darkening to spine. Jacket is in 4 pieces, although the tears are relatively closed and look presentable in mylar. Chipping present with a light soil to rear, closed tear to front. Price of $1.50 present. Rare with the dust jacket.
